3 Credit Hours
This course is intended to help students think broadly about what history is, what historians do, and how they do it. Topics for discussion will include the evolution of history as a discipline from ancient times to the present; theories of history, past and present; working with primary and secondary sources; historical research, writing, and critical analysis; contemporary historiography, methodology, and schools of historical thought. Students will also develop the skills central to the historian’s craft through practical exercises such as developing research strategies, preparing a bibliography, analysing primary documents and other historical sources, and crafting a viable research project.
